Blacks and Republicans

Thomas Sowell has a great piece on how Republicans should approach black voters. I know from experience that blacks can support conservatives with the right arguments and approach. Anyway, here is Sowell's column:

Celebrate Diversity

This story speaks for itself. This is a taste of what we have in store if we don't defeat Islamofascism.

Children Told they are Dogs during Mosque Visit

THE HAGUE, 4/9/08 - A primary school in Amsterdam wished to provide its pupils with an understanding for other cultures. But during a visit to a mosque, the children were told they were dogs.

With a view to developing understanding and respect for other cultures among children, primary school De Horizon regularly organises outings to various religious organisations. The chairman of the El Mouchidine mosque told the children from group 7 (aged 10) and their chaperones however that non-Muslims are dogs.

In a letter to the children's parents, the school expresses its regret at the incident: "We are shocked that during the guided tour, the mosque's chairman told the children and chaperoning parents that non believers were dogs. We consider this statement as unacceptable since we allow our children to partake in this project to develop respect for freedom of religious choice".

In the meantime, the school's management has addressed the mosque on the undesirable behaviour of the chairman. Both parties will say nothing further on the matter. "We will resolve the matter amongst ourselves and I have no inclination whatsoever to discuss the matter with the media", as newspaper De Telegraaf quoted the school's spokesperson Mariet ten Berge. "We have been to the mosque before and it always went well".

Angry parents had sent the letter on to De Telegraaf but were reportedly rapped on the knuckles by the school's management. "The school wishes to play this down. That is precisely the problem", as one mother commented.

Why?

It seems that Hillary Clinton supporters on DailyKos are boycotting the site due to disrespect shown by Obama supporters. I have never been able to figure out why Obama and Clinton supporters hate each other so much. You could measure their policy differences in microns. Oh well, read the flaming on DailyKos, sit back and enjoy the Schadenfreude.

What We Can Expect

Using the observations made below about the states Obama has won, this is what we can expect to see from here on out. Clinton should win Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana, Florida (if they have a re-do), and Kentucky. Obama should take North Carolina, West Virginia, Oregon, Montana, and South Dakota.

I Can't Be The Only One Who's Noticed

Here is the list of primaries and caucuses that Barack Obama has won. Next to each state's name is the percentage of that state's population that is black. Can you see a pattern?

State
Alabama (26.4)
Alaska (3.7)
Colorado (4.1)
Connecticut (10.1)
Delaware (20.7)
Georgia (29.8)
Hawaii (2.3)
Idaho (0.6)
Illinois (15.1)
Iowa (2.3)
Kansas (5.9)
Louisiana (33.1)
Maine (0.8)
Maryland (29.3)
Minnesota (4.3)
Mississippi (36.9)
Missouri (11.5)
Nebraska (4.3)
North Dakota (0.8)
South Carolina (29.2)
Utah (1.0)
Vermont (0.6)
Virginia (19.9)
Washington (3.5)
Washington DC (57.0)
Wisconsin (6.0)
Wyoming (0.9)

Still don't see it? Here's another clue. Blacks comprise 12.8% of the US population. Do you now see the pattern? Only 3 Obama states (Illinois, Missouri, and Connecticut) have a black population within 5 percentage points either way of the national average. All of the other Obama states are at least 20% black or less than 6% black. And one of the three aforementioned Obama states - Illinois - is his home state. If he had moved back to Kansas or Hawaii after finishing Harvard Law School, there is no reason to believe he would have done any better in Illinois than he did in Ohio (11.9% black).

It's really too bad the primaries in Florida and Michigan were not contested. Then we would have much more data on which to draw conclusions. But, we do know that Clinton won New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee and Texas (14.5% 11.9%, 16.8% and 11.7% black respectively) which are much closer to the national average. New York and Arkansas are both within the 5-point range I have discussed, but they are Clinton's home states so I am discounting them just as I have discounted Illinois for Obama.

What does this all mean? Why does Obama do best in states with very large numbers of blacks or almost no blacks at all? What, even more important, does this tell us about white Democrats?

It seems that the less likely white Democrats are to live near blacks, the more likely they are to vote for them.

Raising Taxes on the Wealthy

Congressional Democrats propose to raise income taxes on the wealthy. The catch is that "wealthy" is defined as any individual who earns more than $31,000 per year and any couple who earns more than $62,000 per year. They will also reinstate the 10% tax bracket on the first $7500 of income (which was eliminated by George Bush in 2001). So, Democrats have achieved their dreams of equality. Since Democrats raise taxes only on the wealthy and since they're going to raise taxes on everyone, even those who earn less than $7500, it must mean that everyone is wealthy. Happy days are here again!

$3.45 Per Gallon and Rising

Want to know why gasoline is so expensive and why the oil companies are making such huge profits? Here's the reason:

GREEN MOVEMENT ALSO BEHIND GAS HIKE
By Peter Bronson - Cincinnati Enquirer
3/13/08

USA Today recently reported that 40 percent of economists say the biggest threat of a recession is from rising oil prices. I don't believe it. There is no way 40 percent of economists could agree on anything.

But I do believe 40 percent of $3.50 gas is caused by eco-stupidity.
I know, it's downright heretical to even question the trendy green people who want to cripple our economy to save the planet. But if we take a peek behind the curtain in Eco-Oz, we might be surprised to find out who is pulling the levers to raise gas prices.

Such as:
Rising world demand from China, India and other emerging economies drives up world oil prices. About two-thirds of our oil is imported, and 20 percent comes from the Persian Gulf (less than I thought).

But what if we had our own Iraq-sized supply that we haven't even touched yet?

We do. According to the U.S. Geological Survey and American Petroleum Institute, we have at least 112 billion barrels of undrilled oil - "enough to produce gasoline for 60 million cars and fuel oil for 25 million homes for 60 years."

By comparison, Iraq has 115 billion barrels and Venezuela 80 billion.

At least 16 billion barrels of our oil is in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Drilling would only touch 8 percent of 17 million acres - but environmentalists say it's off-limits.

Half of our untapped oil is offshore, mainly on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts - blocked by environmental fears about spills. But since 1980, offshore platforms have pumped 5 billion barrels of oil with a spill rate of 0.001 percent. "Natural seeps introduce as much as 150 to 175 times more oil into U.S. marine waters than offshore oil development," says API.

During Hurricane Katrina, more than 3,000 oil platforms were in the path of winds as high as 200 mph, with no big spills.

Each barrel of oil pumped at home replaces a barrel of high-cost imported oil. But we're not supposed to get our lands dirty by pumping our own.

We knew five years ago that our refineries can't keep up with demand even at full capacity. But a new refinery hasn't been built since 1976, and the number in service has been shrinking. New ones are blocked by environmentalists, EPA regulations and Not-in-my-Backyard protests.

Later this spring, we'll get another gas-price spike when refineries shut down to blend reformulated gas. Nearly 20 different recipes are mandated by states and cities. But ethanol blends actually add to pollution and are 33 percent less efficient than unblended gas.
"Green" ethanol mandates also cause higher food prices, adding to gas-price inflation.

New environmental regulations to reduce sulfur have raised diesel prices, causing price inflation for everything shipped by trucks, trains and barges.

State gas taxes, often justified for conservation, are 28 cents per gallon in Ohio and 21 cents in Kentucky.

And for all their hysteria about global warming, environmentalists have also blocked the best alternative to coal and oil: pollution free, zero-carbon nuclear power that has safely generated 80 percent of the electricity in France for 25 years.

William Tucker, author of "Terrestrial Energy: How a Nuclear-Solar Alliance Can Save the Planet," says a typical coal-fired plant burns a ton of coal for each minute of electricity, releasing three tons of carbon dioxide.

Nuclear power requires new fuel rods every two years. "There is no exhaust, no carbon emissions, no sulfur sludge to be carted away hourly and heaped into vast dumps," Tucker said at Hillsdale College in Michigan. "There is no air pollution, no water pollution and no ground pollution."

But nuclear power is taboo because of exaggerated fears spread by environmentalists.
A headline the other day reported that new "green" houses near Seattle - designed at great expense to be environmentally sensitive - were burned down anyway by the Earth Liberation Front.

America will never be "green" enough, either, until gas is $25 a gallon. We should ignore the eco-stupidity and start pumping it ourselves.

Was Alan Keyes Busy?

Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark) is running unopposed because the Republicans couldn't field a candidate. Was Alan "Will Campaign for Food" Keyes not available? Hey, Illinois tried it. What does Arkansas have to lose?

The Check Is Not In The Mail

Last weekend we got a letter from the IRS saying that our tax rebates (not our normal tax refund but the extra rebates Congress recently authorized) would be mailed out beginning in May. The letter did not say how much the check would be or when we would get it. In other words, the IRS spent $40 million to tell taxpayers that the check is not in the mail, we don't know how much the check will be, and we don't know when you'll get it.

And who says the government can't keep secrets?

The Audacity Of Michelle Obama

While speaking to a group of Ohio voters, Michelle Obama shows just how arrogant, self-centered, and completely out-of-touch today's Democrat leaders are.

"We spend between the two kids, on extracurriculars outside the classroom, we're spending about $10,000 a year on piano and dance and sports supplements. And summer programs...Do you know what summer camp costs? ... The salaries don't keep up with the cost of paying off the debt, so you're in your 40s, still paying off your debt at a time when you have to save for your kids."

On what planet do these people live? Michelle Obama was "earning" $121,910 per year doing something called "Community Outreach" for the University of Chicago Hospital. That jumped up to $316,962 after Barack was elected US Senator. Coincidence? Is the Pope Catholic? Barack is paid $169,300 for being a Presidential candidate, errr..., for being a US Senator. That gives them a minimum salary of $486,262 BEFORE you add any book royalties. Suffice it to say, I'm sure their income is just a tad north of 7 figures.

Despite all of this, she hadn't been proud of this country until millions of people said they loved Barack. More proof that it's all about them. And, then she complains about paying off student loans while still in her 40s (like she's the only one) and spending in excess of $10,000 on extra-curricular activities for her kids.

There's audacity in there, but it's not the kind that Barack talks about in his book.

But Race Was Not A Factor

Exit polls from today's Mississippi primary show that 90% of blacks voted for Obama and 72% of whites voted for Clinton. The Democrat voters also said that race was not a factor in their decision. Yeah, right. So it's just a coincidence that 90% of blacks voted for Obama and 72% of whites voted for Clinton. Are the Democrats so delusional as to actually believe their own propaganda about skin color? Apparently so. As long as their intentions are "good", they can be excused of anything. If 72% of white Republicans voted for a white candidate ... oh, what's the use? The media will never tell the truth about Democrat policies on race.

Letter to the Editor

This letter appeared in the 2/27/2008 edition of the State Journal-Register. A woman called into the local liberal radio call-in show and said she really liked the letter. The host, in typical liberal fashion, accused me of taking Michelle Obama's remarks out of context (which I did not) and then proceeded to go on and on about our Olympic hockey team while completely ignoring everything else I said. No real surprise there.

Idiotic radio talk show hosts aside, here is the letter.

Dear Editor,

I am astounded that Michelle Obama took more than 40 years to find something about the United States of which to be proud. I am only a year younger than Mrs. Obama, yet I can think of many reasons to be proud of our country.

I was proud of America when the Berlin Wall fell down and freedom blossomed in Eastern Europe. I was proud of America when we landed men on the moon. I was proud of America when our Olympic hockey team beat the Soviets. I was proud of America when we came together after 9/11. I was proud of America when we responded with overwhelming generosity to Hurricane Katrina victims or the famine in East Africa during the 1980s or the Indonesian tsunami in 2004. I was proud of America when we got back the first pictures from Viking, Pathfinder, Sojourner, Voyager or a myriad of other spacecraft.

I was proud of America when we removed a brutal tyrant from power in Iraq. I am proud of America every time we win a Nobel Prize in the sciences. I was proud of America when a Canadian woman delivered her quadruplets in one of our hospitals because no hospital in all of Canada had enough neo-natal beds. However, I am most proud of America when a working-class black girl from Chicago gets the privilege to attend Princeton and Harvard. Does this remind you of anyone, Mrs. Obama?

Perhaps I should not be so astounded by Mrs. Obama's attitude. For more than 35 years the Democratic Party has invested itself in running this country down and doing nothing but pointing out our flaws. As a long-time Democratic operative, Mrs. Obama is simply parrotting the only opinions she has ever heard. It's really not her fault. She doesn't know any better. I feel very, very sorry for her.

Economic Stimulus Alternatives

Today, President Bush announced tax rebates amounting to $150 billion that is supposed to stave off a recession. The IRS is right on the case and the checks will be out in July (if the Democrats don't do something to screw it up, which I'm sure they will).

Instead of shifting $150 billion from our left pocket to our right pocket, here are some alternatives to get the economy moving again.

1 - Eliminate the capital gains tax. Why should stock dividends be taxed twice?
2 - Allow younger workers to put part of their Social Security taxes into private accounts. This would flood the financial markets with desperately needed capital and put the economy into overdrive.
3 - Eliminate the Department of Education, HUD, and all assistance to the UN. Fire everyone in the CIA and replace them with people who actually love this country. Same goes for the State Department. Return any saved money to the taxpayers. I know it's not much, but it's the thought that counts.
4 - Scrap the current tax system and replace it with a flat tax. How much money can we save by not having to hire armies of accountants and lawyers to figure out our income taxes?

Just a few ideas off the top of my head. I'm open to more suggestions.

What the Democrats Believe

Since I've posted what Republicans believe, it's only fair that I should post what Democrats believe.

We in the Democratic Party believe, above everything else, in the absolute right of any woman to have an abortion at any point in the pregnancy for any reason with absolutely no restrictions whatsoever. We will oppose any regulation of any kind on abortion facilities. This is the one belief we have which is not negotiable under any circumstances. Abortion now. Abortion tomorrow. Abortion forever.

We believe any female has the absolute right to contraception, even if the female is a minor. We believe that to protect their privacy, children should be the sole arbiters of what is in their own best interest. We believe privacy rights trump all other rights.

We believe that government has a compelling interest in promoting racial diversity, and that this compelling interest overrides the so-called “rights” of parents to make educational decisions for their children. Parents have shown a tendency to segregate on the basis of race and therefore must abrogate their rights to the government.

We believe the Constitution protects the rights of homosexuals to get married, even if the people or their elected representatives vote otherwise. We also believe that all people have the Constitutional right to express their sexuality in any way they see fit.

We believe in the endemic racism of Caucasians. We believe this racism will never end and as such the government has a responsibility to enact affirmative action programs. Therefore government agencies at all levels have the right and the responsibility to make decisions based on the ethnic background of individuals.

We believe the capitalistic system is inherently unfair and unjust, particularly towards women and racial minorities. Therefore, we believe the poor are entitled to government benefits and are under no obligation to do anything to alleviate their own poverty.

We believe in the sanctity of the Social Security system as it exists today. We oppose any efforts to privatize the system due to the inherent inequity in capitalism.

We believe that the United States military is the greatest threat to world peace. We will work to weaken the military at all levels to ensure it cannot be used against sovereign nations.

We believe that the United Nations is the only hope for world stability. We completely support any UN attempts to interfere with American national interests.

We believe the threat of so-called “Islamic” terrorists is exaggerated and that terrorism, if it exists, is a law-enforcement issue.

We believe that teachers and educational professionals are the only people capable of making educational decisions. Teachers have the absolute right to teach whatever they wish, no matter what religious or moral objections the parents may have (unless the parents are Wiccans, atheists, or Muslims). We oppose merit pay for teachers. No teacher is better than another.
